The Math Nobody Runs
One inch of rain on a 2,000-square-foot roof is roughly 1,200 gallons. A typical Howard County year puts well over 40,000 gallons on that roof. Every gallon either travels through a working gutter system to a chosen discharge point, or it doesn't, and on a slope, water that escapes the system doesn't stand politely in the yard. It moves, and it takes the path your grading gives it.
What Sloped Terrain Changes
On flat lots, a clogged gutter makes a puddle. On the grades common from the historic district out through Dunloggin and Font Hill, an overflowing gutter can send sheet flow along the uphill wall of the house, exactly where hydrostatic pressure does basement damage. Downhill discharge matters too: a downspout dumping at the foundation on the high side effectively waters your basement.
Where Systems Fail on Slopes
The failure points repeat: undersized 5-inch runs on big roof planes that overflow mid-storm, downspouts that end at the foundation with no extension, splash blocks aimed uphill, and valleys concentrating two roof planes into one overwhelmed corner. An Honest Boundary
Gutters manage roof water, and only roof water. Grading, French drains, and sump systems are their own trades, and severe surface-water problems need them.
